Project Overview

Changing Landscapes

A touch screen lets visitors compare before and after satellite photographs of seven different locations to study the effects of nature and urbanization.

The third Public Vault in the National Archives emphasizes records of firsts and frontiers and shows how the human spirit and ingenuity helped to realize many of the promises of America as envisioned by our founders. In the single computer interactive in this vault, visitors can see the effects of nature in the images that document the shape of Mount St. Helens before and after its volcanic eruption. The impact of Disneyland and Disneyworld on their environments are obvious in chronologically comparative images of Orlando and Anaheim, as are the effects of urban sprawl in Las Vegas.
