Project Overview

Changing the Face of Medicine Web Site

A companion online exhibition provides access to the information, media, and activities featured in the temporary exhibition at the National Library of Medicine.

Women physicians have excelled in many diverse medical careers. Some have advanced the field of surgery by developing innovative procedures. Some have won the Nobel Prize. Others have brought new attention to the health and well-being of children. Many have reemphasized the art of healing and the roles of culture and spirituality in medicine. This Web site organizes all the content in the exhibition as it was originally exhibited: visitors can follow the exhibition narrative from one historical or thematic section to another, or follow it based on the women that epitomize each era. A searchable database lets visitors find physicians by location, ethnicity, specialization, or medical school, and returns extensive biographical information, question-and-answer interviews, and photo galleries. Visitors can share their stories about memorable physicians and play all the game-like educational activities featured in the resource center.
