We used media architecture to help root a new place in the public imagination.
Can a building revolutionize the way private industry and academic research collaborate and innovate? By combining creative workplace design with cutting-edge research labs and communal spaces, Coda is poised to do just that. To open the first-of-its-kind building, John Portman Holdings commissioned us to create outdoor media art that would introduce people to this new Atlanta landmark and set the tone for the space.
We crafted a series of large-scale animated artworks in the public courtyard to elicit curiosity and spark conversation. Instead of extolling the building’s literal features and amenities, each of the five works conveys one essential attribute of the Coda experience. Abstract ideas like “serendipity” and “metamorphosis” come to life through a distinct aesthetic and set of behaviors.
Unlike the advertising that blares from typical large outdoor screens, the mesmerizing cadence and ambient nature of the art complements the built environment rather than competing with it. The result is an emotive expression of place that enhances the daily experience of the community, while leaving room for everyone to wonder what’s next.
