Diode Gallery Window Display

This lab project transformed a street-level display window into an interactive canvas.

Portland’s Diode Gallery for Electronic Art featured an eclectic mix of technology-based artwork, but its location on a dimly lit street made it difficult to find after dark. Using Unity, Kinect 2, and a responsive lighting system, we created an interactive window display that attracted the attention of passersby and engaged people of all ages in a fun physical experience. Activated when users approached, the installation illuminated and reacted to their gestures. Beautiful and bright, it became an unexpected gathering place for curious pedestrians.

Using Kinect 2, we were also able to track the installation’s usage, measuring how many interactions were taking place, when they were happening, and for how long. Because the project was accessible around the clock, these analytics provided interesting insights into foot traffic patterns at the gallery’s location.
