Project Overview

From Silver to Gold

Five filmmakers share their behind-the-scenes stories about shooting 1999’s Oscar-nominated movies in this captivating Web site.

Worlds away from the flurry of red-carpet Oscar tributes, visitors to Kodak.com explore the story of the seldom-recognized stars of cinema: film stock and the cinematographers who use it. The filmmakers featured in this site share insider information, from accounts of their favorite scenes and most difficult shots, to tips about the film stock they used The significance of the film stock becomes clear: without this modest silver-based medium, there would be no Oscar® gold. The site also shows how motion picture film is actually created—how cellulose acetate comes together with silver to become film. The filmstrip is a driving metaphor behind From Silver to Gold, representing the transition from the film medium to the big screen. The site opens with a frame-by-frame walkthrough of the process of creating film stock. A full-screen letterbox highlights each nominated movie and captures the cinematic feel of the wide screen. Site visitors can select a film and explore interviews with its cinematographer or watch streaming video trailers of it.
