An animated slideshow exposes government efforts to censor the internet content available to China’s citizens.
Displayed on three mounted tablets, this interactive narrative offers visitors a detailed look at the elaborate system the Chinese government uses to control the public’s access to the truth. By thwarting attempts to organize in opposition to its policies and presenting sanitized versions of controversial events—particularly the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre—the government uses the internet to showcase a whitewashed view of the past and present and crack down on efforts to enact political change in the future.
The Internet Freedom interactive enables visitors to explore for themselves the impact of the government’s grip on the fundamental freedoms of speech, assembly, and the press that many outside of China take for granted.
