Global Crossroads Media Wall
The media wall broadcasts Occidental’s commitment to openness, academic excellence, global affairs, and visual literacy and serves as a physical reflection of the liberal arts experience and its commitment to inquiry and exploration.
More than 50 feet wide and 30 feet tall, the wall is a beacon within Johnson Hall’s McKinnon Center for Global Affairs. Designed to evoke the connective landscape of knowledge and analysis that fuels learning in the information age, its distinctive form factor pushes students to consider visual and structural design, continuity, and storytelling techniques that they can then apply to their rigorous academic research, helping them to better express their point of view to a wider audience, often without the aid of textual guidance or narration. By imposing thoughtful and deliberate constraints on how work can be displayed, the wall encourages students to think creatively and consider new ways to visually present their ideas.
The wall’s content is curated by a small team at Oxy using a customized admin tool, with particularly thought-provoking projects selected for display. Real-time activation of the wall is also possible. Students can transform it into a user-controlled presentation surface, visualizing their work across Johnson Hall’s two-story atrium for groups, classes, and special events.
