Project Overview

Sleeping Giants: Aviation Afterlife in the Desert

Through a visual collage of photographs, ambient slide guitar, and audio narration, this Web site gives the public access to life inside this remote aviation retirement center.

From the sky, it appears like a vast tapestry stretching for miles across the Arizona desert. Arranged in intricate parking patterns, thousands of military aircraft that once flew over Vietnam and Saudi Arabia shimmer in the relentless sun. This is AMARC (Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center), where retired military aircraft come for rest, recycling, and rehabilitation. Using photographs by Kodak.com editor David Kassnoff as the basis for the design, the site is structured to allow the animated aviation photography—and the voices of AMARC employees—to speak for themselves. Visitors are serenaded by desert-inspired acoustic guitar riffs as they follow the process of planes from Hibernation to Awakening to the Flight Out.
