Project Overview

TEDxPortland After-Party 2011

An interactive response station polls party-goers while a projection shows a real-time visualization of attendee’s opinions.

Second Story partnered with Wieden+Kennedy and Emerge Interactive to develop an interactive experience in support of the TEDx conference in Portland. Displayed at an after-hours party, the interactive was designed as an experiment in people, their ideas and opinions, and how to create connections in a simple, engaging, multi-platform fashion.

TEDxPortland is the regional version of the international conference series that focuses on Technology, Entertainment, Design, and Society. Using these themes as a springboard for discussion, each attendee to the party was provided an opportunity to voice their opinion through the interactive. Attendees were given a lanyard that recognized the individual, and replied to a series of questions at a response station. A projection visualized the responses in real-time, tracking the overall pulse of opinion at the party, and providing a beautiful, dynamic image of attendee interaction.

Second Story built the kiosk, visualization, and software backend; Emerge Interactive built a mobile experience that integrated cleanly with our software infrastructure. This project was an ideal opportunity to help support the local community and to imagine how to best visualize the theme of the day: Crossroads.
