TerraQuest: Virtual Antarctica
With chats and dispatches linking people via Inmarsat satellite systems, this Web site made history as the first commercial travel expedition to make live uplinks to the Internet from Antarctica.
On December 10, 1995, TerraQuest’s maiden voyage set sail for Antarctica on the expedition ship Livonia. Over the next two weeks, online adventurers from around the world followed the crew and their guests as they sailed across Drake’s Passage to the frozen continent. Would-be adventurers can still explore the journey via a ship’s log, maps, and itineraries, and discover Antarctica’s ecology, wildlife, landscape, and history of human exploration.
