Reuniting artworks from the Fifty Works for Fifty States gift, this digital collection allows curators to collaborate in creating a unique resource on contemporary minimalist and post-expressionist art.
With support from the National Gallery of Art, the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), and the National Endowments for the Arts, this simple yet vibrant site brings together 2,500 artworks that were gifted by Herbert and Dorothy Vogel to fifty museums across America, one in each state. The site’s robust content management tools and flexible HTML design allows each institution to add new essays and media to artwork, artist, and institution records, as well as to curate new online exhibitions. A dynamic, colorful Flash component visualizes real-time results of visitor filtering for artworks. With extensive interlinking of records by category and different way of viewing the collection, the site promotes expansive, intuitive discovery of the Vogels’ collection of minimalist, abstract, and post-expressionist art from the 1960s to the present day.
